Re “Refusing to Exit, Biden Denounces Critics in Party” (front page, July 9):
In his letter to congressional Democrats, President Biden not only refused to admit or explain his concerning poll numbers, he failed to address specific challenges he faces: undecided and independent voters, partisans in Congress, and bad actors in the media and cyberspace.
He also refuses to see that many people in America are dissatisfied, despite all that he feels he has done for them. The toxic swamp of lies and anger that breeds populism may drag him down, and all of us with him.
Most Democrats will vote for him ultimately if he is the nominee. But Democratic voters are only 27 percent of the electorate.
I fear that Mr. Biden and his defenders are making the same assumptions about Americans that tripped up Hillary Clinton’s campaign. They think that everyone should vote for them because they are right and good, and refuse to acknowledge a huge swath of the voting public that is (rightly or wrongly) turned off.
This indefatigable righteousness may be the undoing of us all.

To the Editor:
President Biden has made it clear that he isn’t dropping out of the race. Now it is time for all Democrats to rally and show support for him so we can defeat Donald Trump. You can’t expect the public to feel comfortable supporting him if the news is constantly reporting that some bigwigs in the party do not. We don’t have time to waste with less than four months to this incredibly important election.
I can’t believe that one bad debate performance has resulted in this amount of doubt given the president’s great performance thus far. It’s time for Democrats to turn this around and direct all this criticism toward Mr. Trump: how dangerous he is to our democracy and how his mental acuity is an issue as well.
